Somasundar Nair has been the Director of our Fleet Personnel Department since 2021. In this role, he manages the global crewing of over 620 ships under Fleet's technical management. His responsibilities include overseeing recruitment, training, and welfare of maritime personnel, ensuring efficient and safe operations. Known affectionately as Captain Soma, he leads his team with a focus on discipline and teamwork, while maintaining a humane approach to challenges.

Before joining Fleet, Soma accumulated extensive maritime experience, having served as a Master on various vessels, including tankers and container ships. He began his career after graduating from Training Ship Jawahar, Mumbai, in 1989, and rose to the rank of Master in 2002. During his 16-year sea career, he worked with organisations such as Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. and Anglo Eastern Ship Management Ltd. In 2005, he transitioned to AESM's Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment division, later moving to the Fleet Personnel department in 2009. He is a member of the Seafarers Advisory Board in Hong Kong and actively contributes to the Maritime Personnel Education and Training subcommittee. A dedicated sportsman, he enjoys cricket, table tennis, and golf in his leisure time.
